The National Alliance for Public Charter Schools (NAPCS), in partnership with the Kentucky Charter Schools Association, just released results of a public poll suggesting that a strong majority of Kentuckians favor charter schools. Kentucky is currently one of only eight states with no provision for public charter schools (full discloser: I am a member of KCSA's board of directors).
The phone survey (which included calls to mobile phones) polled 501 registered Kentucky voters during October 2013. A majority of respondents (57%) initially claimed that they were "undecided" about charter schools, but once a series of descriptive statements about charters were shared, fully 71% said they supported the concept. Additionally, 82% indicated a desire for more public education options for families. Positive views of charter schools were reported consistently across all regions of the state.
You can view the NAPCS press release about the poll here, and review full details of the survey here.
The results suggest that many Kentuckians may be largely uneducated about how charter schools work, but like the concept when they learn more about it.
Here's why I support charter schools and school choice in general.
