I was honored to recently be a guest on the TeachThought podcast series. TeachThought is a comprehensive website devoted to helping teachers improve their practice and exploring cutting edge innovations in education.
I enjoyed a wide-ranging discussion with podcast host Drew Perkins, TeachThought's Director of Professional Development and a Kentucky educator who does excellent workshops on project-based learning and other topics. Drew and I discussed the seismic shift toward personalization that is occurring in education, and how school choice might help facilitate that trend. Listen to the podcast here.
One of the things I tried to emphasize is that, while I heartily support a wide range of school choice policies, choice itself is no panacea for educational improvement. Many schools of choice continue to offer a very teacher-centered and industrial model of learning. And competition alone isn't sufficient to ensure school quality or equitable opportunities for all students. Nevertheless, I believe expanding educational options, especially for low- and middle-income Kentuckians, is a necessary (if insufficient) step toward creating a vibrant schooling market that has the capacity to meet every child's needs.
